Samuel de Champlain was a French adventurer who played a key role in the establishment of Quebec and New France. He was born around 1567 and died in 1635. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean between 21 and 29 times, exploring and mapping the coasts of North America. He also engaged in diplomacy and trade with the native peoples, and fought against the English and the Iroquois. He is considered one of the founders of Canada and a remarkable figure in its history.
