So as a free to play who has played this since day 1, I can definitely agree you don't need to spend money to go far in this game. The Hero Alter (To get new heroes and thus more card generation) does provide with a Choose Your Rare Hero option after 100 draws, which is basically a strong enough spike for you to deal with most fights in the early game. After a while you get another chest for Choose an Epic Hero which in theory will take over the Rare, but honestly it likely won't with how well you've upgraded your rare hero. This of course is just talking about the guaranteed heroes, you could be like me and lucky pull another Rare/Epic Hero without the chest (I got a secondary Epic) and you could take over like that.
But overall it is definitely a good game in my opinion: Just know that the game is VERY buggy. It's F2P friendly but like most mobile styled games, you'll have to idle sometimes to build up the card collection at first. Every hero is more cards as they all have a separate card generator
