In our previous video we installed VPN Server onto our Synology NAS. Then with VPN Server installed onto our NAS, we configured it to use L2TP/IPSec. So in this video we are going to take a look at how we configure the VPN client built into macOS and then demonstrate how we connect to our NAS using the VPN client.

Please note that Synology documentation is often vague and can be a little confusing. This makes configuring Synology's VPN Server a difficult task to complete. So please note, that what you are viewing in this video, is based on what we have been able to ascertain from trial and error, rather than a definitive source.

This means, that so far we have only been able to work out how to connect macOS to our VPN Server, to allow us to access network shares and relay internet traffic through our VPN connection.

I rarely comment on YouTube videos, but this is perhaps one of the most informative/definitive series on NAS setups I've ever encountered. Not only are you teaching how the system works, but the general IT knowledge has helped me be able to diagnose and properly look up things on the internet!

One thing for my context and situation, I use a Netgear WNDR3400v3 and initially when I was following the instructions in this video, I wasn't connecting to the VPN. After diagnosing the problem, it appeared that one of the ports for L2TP/IPSec had been occupied. I hard reset my network router and it worked after going through the port forwarding setup on the Synology web client! I've basically had to reconnect all my devices, but a small price to pay for when we will have to work away from our home.

Your series is fantastic and has been very helpful. Thank you for all of the time that you have put into it. Please consider doing an episode on Synology Drive and how to use it to sync to an offsite NAS.

I’ve found this series very helpful. When’s the next video coming out about setting up a DNS server? 🙂

After watching this video i achieved to catch up for the first time.

I feel like watching TV series and now i have to wait anxiously for the next episode.

Your work is amazing. This playlist is a reason for its own for someone to purchase a synology NAS. I have the DS218 model.

Topics i would like to see in the future:
-https
-Nas act as a DHCP server
-Nas act as a DNS server
-Surveillance station. I have a Xiaomi IP camera and and i did not manage to make it work. Maybe it can't.
-Moments-photo station. Now i use only file station. Is it worth it to use one of the applications and which one of them? I heard that at the next version of DSM they will combine these 2 applications.

-What else to expect from the next version of DSM?

-Do you thing that installing an antivirus (antivirus essential) has anything to offer?

Thanks again for your great work! I hope Synology sees how great your work is.

worked a treat thank-you. Any news on the video for those of us already up and running before your series started so we missed the opportunity to create another admin / Admin ?

I've set up OpenVPN and i use it from an android smartphone and from a windows laptop.

I am really happy with how smooth it works although it was a little confusing during the configuration at some points.

Now i want to set it up at an Ubuntu laptop (same laptop, dual boot with Windows).
I've had some difficulties the first time i tried. I'll try again.

To the point now. I do not have "allow clients to access server's LAN" enabled. Nevertheless when connected to the VPN i have access to other devices at my local network, let's say my router. Do you have any explanation?

Unfortunately, i don't have a static IP from my ISP. I use No-IP free edition and it works just fine. Sadly DynDNS is not free as in the past.

I Can't connect to the VPN for somereason same thing happens with remote access UNLESS i add the Port 5000 or 5001 to the end of it, this however does not seem to work for the VPN... is there a way to fix this?

Nevermind fixed it with proper port forwarding

By using the Synology NAS as the VPN server, does that mean the VPN client such as this Mac computer can only access the NAS and the NAS only over the Internet or does the established VPN tunnel "expose" the entire LAN to the Mac client where the Synology is a member device? If so, the Mac client can access all other resources within this LAN?
