Taking a very in depth look at the Line6 M5 Stompbox modeler. I’ve had one of these on every pedalboard I’ve had since they came out more than 10 years ago.

It’s vast array of effects combined with its simplicity of using one of those effects at a time makes it a must for any pedalboard. Especially at €120 off the shelf!!

Combine it with a loop switcher with midi and it can replace a huge number of pedals on any board.

This is a 20 min long video so here are some time stamps in case you don't want to watch the whole thing:

The M5 in a track: 2:47
4 great things about the M5: 4:36
How the M5 works: 11:27
The M5 on a MIDI enabled pedalboard: 15:35

I really can't recommend this little pedal highly enough. For what it can do the price is an absolute steal.

I’ve had one on my board for a couple of years, with Boss ES5 doing the midi patch changes. Worth emphasising that you can only use one effect sound at a time, and if you don’t use midi your patch changes will be slow and clunky if using live. However, the sounds are really good. Mine is mainly set up to do line 6 versions of fuzz face/big muff/tone bender/tube driver etc for a Floyd tribute. Wasn’t aware of any of the reliability issues - thanks for the heads up. 👍🏻

Based on your advice, I Just picked one up today for €30, it was broken (the grounding issue you mentioned) but I managed to fix it by grinding the paint off the case at the screws! It's 100% now and I'm loving it,

Thanks Rob

I already have a pedal board full of my favorite pedals. This one is nice for the effects that you might want to add occasionally. Effects that you don't use enough to have a separate pedal for.

I’ve used one since 2011. Now if you don’t use midi. You can get away with only using a 300 milliamp 9 volt adaptor. I’ve been using mine for years like that. Only issues I ever had was with MIDI with a Boss MS3. But otherwise I’ve had it on the 300ma socket on a Cioks DC5 for years with no issues.

Everything you'd want from line 6, without anything you don't want. Just picked one up. Good shout.

Hey Rob! I just bought one used for $90 US and went looking for videos about it and found yours. Excellent video as always. I recognize the sounds of course from Helix Legacy effects (I have Native, sold my LT). I'm not thrilled with the drive presets so far but the delay/reverb/modulations are all great. I've got it hooked up to my Nux Amp Academy and use it for quick jamming or testing out song ideas.

So, can we activate multiple effects in a single patch simultaneously like delay + reverb + modulation i.e ?

I'm pretty sure they would sell a ton if they used a similar format with the HX family effects. Like a "Mini HX Effects"...?

I occasionally use mine as a Volume Pedal with an added Expression pedal. Love the Reverb and Delays. You are able to assign the expression pedal to any effect and have it control the depths and speeds and mixes and such. An incredibly versatile pedal with great sounding modulation and time based effects. I found the od and distortion effects to be a bit noisey, but that could be a "me" issue. M9 allows for more than one effect. That would be handy.

Is it in stereo and does it have a compressor?

Is it possible to activate 2 effects at the same time when using a midi pedal board?

I got mine foe £60 in the box!
As you can only use one of the 100+ effects at a time have a Boss RV-6 reverb on all the time and then my M5 with a midi controller so I can switch effects on the go!

i bought 2 and they cost me 123 euros(both) i use it in the loop of my amp and in the front i use my boss gt100 i have the perfect set i have to say, i have a soldano SLO-30 amp and after a life of tweaking pedals and sound i think i achieve "perfection", obviously i always tweak one more value here and there, my live sound is on point and the M5 is responsible for that as well(mostly reverbs-delays and some drivers that sound like U2 in the amp loop) i have a loop switch for this pedal tho, even knowing they say it is true by pass, for me its easier because i choose the effect that i want and in the correct part of the song i just click on the loop switch

I'd love to heat the Line6 M5 stomp box modeler through my vintage Vox AC30 amp If I'm not too late to be included in the prize giveaway.
Loving the channel and the content.

I have a question about Line6 M5, is it possible to keep the settings in M5 of individual effects (not presets mode!) such as equalizer or tone in overdrive.
In setup I have auto preservation settings, but still when I change and go/return the settings remain firm.
Maybe I am misunderstanding, but shouldn't the change of settings be saved according to the user and setup?

I wish I knew about this earlier, but I would use the brown aka 5150, It woud go infront of my M5, into my Boss Katana MK2 100, 1.12, with(green) chorus very low almost not on but there, then (green) delay at 1:00, oh amp gain 25%, then reverb at 11:00 an (red) ( ) preset color on the katana. Last the M5 because of the brown distortion I would use maybe a boost or wah.

Great video Rob. It's a fantastic pedal I had one years ago and found it useful especially the filters on Bass were great 👍🏼

Trey from Phish uses 2 of them. One pre power tubes and one post amp. They really are great. Nearly any player is going to find something they really kike that it offers

This is such a great pedal. I use it for all the stuff that I use occasionally but don't want to buy a permanent pedal. £99 is all I paid...
