One of the many highlights of our trip was visiting the immersive Bastogne War Museum in Belgium with Gene Kleindl, a Battle of the Bulge Veteran. Gene doesn’t remember much from this battle, but he reminisced as he made his way through the exhibits.

I visited Bastogne in 1995 as a young soldier and studied the battle. Whenever things got difficult over my next 23 years of service through Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan I remembered what these heroes endured and simply carried on.

That smile at the end brought tears to my eyes. Someone who's been through a hell we couldn't imagine can STILL SMILE SO GENUINELY!

I would like to thank the many people that took their time and energy to put together all of these military memories for, firstly the veterans who were there and then the veterans that didn't make it back. But now the people if the future can learn and appreciate the sacrifices made for their freedoms.

So sad to see us losing them!! I just saw a video about the only living WWII veteran who was the son of a Civil War veteran. Perry amazing thing! God Bless and keep all our AMAZING VETERANS, STILL WITH US AND NOT WITH US. THANK YOU FOR STANDING FOR ME, BORN IN 1968. You stood for me some, almost 30ish yrs b4 I was even a glint in my USN SUBMARINER fathers and USN WAVE mother's eyes!! The world will be much more empty with the loss of any and all United States Veterans! From any time period that they STOOD FOR US ALL!! AND CONTINUE TO STAND FOR US ALL!! FALLEN OR NOT, THEY STAND TALL AND PROUD!! Words are just not enough anymore!! AGAIN GOOD BLESS THEM ALL!!!

My uncle was then Captain Roy H. Moore, Jr MD, who was a surgeon with the 326th AMC ( Airborne Medical Corps ) that was attached to the 101st throughout WWII. Near Bastogne their field hospital was overrun and captured by the Germans. My uncle escaped as he was on latrine duty and with the help of a Belgian farm family made his way back to Allied lines. He then parachuted blind back into Bastogne where he operated almost continously until Bastogne was relieved. He received the Bronze Star with a V for that. He was then promoted to Major and given command of what was left of the 326th and reformed the unit which rejoined the 101st in the spring. He turned 30 at Bertchesgarden and was presented with a stack of 30 flapjacks as a birthday cake. A picture of him cutting it with a German dress dagger with the Eagles Nest in the background appeared in many US newspapers. He returned to his hometown and had a successful surgical practice and passed in 1994.
The very few veterans that survive represent all those who have passed in combat, as well as those who survived and returned home to " normal " lives, but have passed in the last 80 years.
