As a finn, I feel like we've not only lost a guitar legend, but a national hero of sorts. We finnish people admire other finns who are able to put Finland on the map + he was an amazing metal musician, he will be sorely missed by many people around the world and that warms my heart despite the horrible event.

Im 19 and Alexi Laiho made me want to start playing the guitar because my dad had met him plenty of times. He lived like few kilometers from my house.

I’m a 36 year old guy with 2 kids, and I broke down and cried this morning as I told my wife that Alexi died. I think that was a first for me.

Kissing the Shadows has one of the best solos of all time. That guitar/keyboard duel is amazing.

Totally agree with you. He was the guitar idol of our generation, like VH was in his time. I remember listening to Hatebreeder with my friends and trying to figure out some licks. We wanted to be like him, play like him. And to think he was 19/20 when he recorded Hatebreeder is just insane. His music is the soundtrack of my teens, no doubt about it. RIP Alexi WildChild Laiho

"Downfall" is probably my favorite solo of his, and it's also a strong contender for my favorite COB song. COB was one of those foundational bands that got be into heavy music (Melodeath specifically), and just like Bradley (and many more in the comments, I'm sure) his style of playing has greatly influenced my own. It's a damn shame, but at the very least, Alexi left an impressive legacy for someone so young.

I'm late 30s, and I remember hearing "Something Wild" as a 16 year old, and just being amazed that someone just a couple years older than me was achieving at such a high level, internationally. Amazingly inspiring.

My wife really loves COB and Alexi. She have seen them over 20 times and have every album signed.
I myself remember him at a festival we both attended, he as an artist with COB and me as a rep for diff bands.
Sat in the instrument display tent (music retailer tent) which had around 200 people in it at the time playing various versions of Smoke on the water, when this scrawny short pale guy with glasses and a cap sat down beside me in the Jackson booth and started playing some Malmsteen licks on this Green Meanie with me and a acquaintance of mine.
We both knew who this guy was and just let him be him self for about 30 minutes when we all of a sudden started playing Downfall and later Needled.
A group of 10 Finnish, mildly inebriated, COB fans noticed us and our session ended.

That was a nice day.

(Got my ass signed by Satchel that day as well)

I spent my entire ninth grade learning Kissing the Shadows note for note. I wouldn't be half the guitarist I am today without Alexi's influence. RIP, brother.

He was one of the reasons for me to pick up the guitar again when i was a high school student. He was one of my biggest influences with John Petrucci and Randy Rhoads. I can't describe how sad i am right now, i still can't believe it. Rest in peace Alexi, you will be missed.

Kissing the shadows is not a solo, its a death metal orgasm symphony, a masterpiece that will forever stay in the throne of death metal guitar tunes history

That solo from Kissing the Shadows. Man, that is great.

He was 41 but had more miles on him than most at 80. So sad to hear about his passing.
