This is the epic battle scene between Prince Jai (Jay Chou) and the Emperor (Chow Yun-fat).

Although, he had little chance of defeating the Emperor with his army, he fought to the end in a brutal ending costing all of his soldiers' lives.

I think the most impressive and cruel part of the film isn't this battle but the aftermath : the emperor servants quickly brush up the soldiers corpses, clean up the blood with water, replace the trampled flowers with yellow ones prepared in advance, bring a new carpet. Everything is erased, forgotten in mere minutes. Like cleaning up the body of an insect after squashing it. It was grandiose but incredibly sinister.

To all those who are criticizing this; In the movie, this was supposed to be an ambush from the "golden army", they were only imperial guards and wasn't expecting a proper defense. The empress manipulated one of her prince, Prince Jai to aid her in plotting a revolution against the emperor, of which the emperor found out before they initiated the invasion, thus becoming a slaughter house. To me, this is one of the best war scenes of that time. I was really mesmerized by the mass army and coordination, despite being really unfair for the golden army.

No the most inspiring part of all this is how loyal the soldiers are to Prince Jia and protect him with everything they have knowing full well that they will most likely die.

This is more like a drama than a realistic battle, but being a drama can more touchingly express the meanings and emotions the director wants to give us. This is a slaughter. The rebels are fighting a battle doomed to lose, and they probably know their fate already, just like Prince Jie decided to rebel even though he knew his father the Emperor probably had known the plan. Do what you already know that won't succeed, that's being heroic and idealistic in a heartbreaking way.

Three Kingdoms total war right here. Ppl complain that they shoot so fast, welp this is because their bows are not long bows. Also they were trained foot archers.

jai’s only alive because the emperor gave specific instructions not to harm him. his fighting doesn’t come off as impressive or heroic at all because they’re not even allowed to hurt him. he’d be a stain on the ground just like everyone else under normal circumstances lol
