Someday Sweetheart - Muggsy Spanier and the Bob Crosby Bobcats - Live 1940

Cornetist Muggsy Spanier joined the Bob Crosby Orchestra in late Spring of 1940. It was less than a year earlier that Muggsy had recorded his own Ragtime Band for the Bluebird label for a series of classic renditions famously dubbed the "Great 16." The tune "Someday Sweetheart" was one of the recordings done in the first Ragtime Band session of 7 July 1939 but Muggsy did not take a full solo chorus. On this Bobcats version you can hear a full Muggsy chorus with excellent backing by the other horn men as well as wonderful fills by pianist Jess Stacy. The solo order is noted on the video slide. It's a shame the Crosby gang didn't record this for Decca Records. Lastly, I must apologize for the lower fidelity of this item but is from a home recorded disc and is a product of the times. Imagine if we had today's technology back then; oh man! Enjoy this unissued gem!

A wonderful chorus by Muggsy! Having listened to many recordings by my favorite cornetist, this solo is as good as any I've heard.

As much as I admire the Ragtime Band version (and the entire "Great 16"), I think I may prefer this Bobcats take, not least for Stacy's presence.

The rhythm section -- not just Stacy -- is unusually audible, which is a treat. And Muggsy is lovely at this tempo, unlike the very fast ones he chose later in his career.
