Not always, it depends where you go to University, my sons go to the Politechnic in Torino and they don't have to suit up for exams, they dress up only when they discuss their thesis

My family is southern italian here are the facts: standard italian looks overall brown hair and eyes any skin white to tan is predominant in italy greece, spain sometimes black but more dark brown. This is mediterranean looks. Sicily and sardanian have a little more arabic looks due to history. Also lighter looks on italy not as common on dark hair spectrum. Italian has many shapes, forms.

Dressing smart for exams is a pain, especially during summer exams... I didn't know you can be totally casual in the US or UK!

Through DNA, I just found out my grandfather was from Italy (Pesche, Campobasso, Molse). I was so shocked, as I am very fair, blue eyed, natural blonde. We were under the assumption that my grandfather was from Ireland...lol... I want to learn more about my Italian side.

Many foreigners will confuse this topic with "fashion", but for Italians it's not a matter of fashion: it's a matter of traditions, it's a way of living. For us, comfortable doesn't equal to sloppy / lazy, and classy and elegant is still comfortable. Even during summer. For instance, I never ever wear sneakers or sandals: espadrillas will be comfortable while still be decent for me, paired with a short sleeved shirt and pants, or shorts when it's really hot. (The shorts taboo comes from an old tradition which lasted until the 50's: they were exclusively for children and teenager up until 14 y/o when they became men and were allowed to wear pants. Nowadays it's no more like that, but somehow we still see shorts as a bit childish.)
Of course these ways of dressing are changing over time, especially among younger generations, and there are far more sloppy dressed Italians compared to the past... but tourists, especially Americans and English speaking ones, will always stand out and be noticed for their sloppy dress habits. It's just their DNA. LOL
