Consider this, we live in a world without knowing anything about why are we here, why anything. The only reason we don't consider understanding this because we were always struggling to survive. But there must have always been people at the top who didn't need to work at all to survive and if any sane person is provided resources to survive, I think it is natural to seek reason for existence. It's more likely than not, some powerful people organized themselves to seek the truth. With the modern world providing most people resources to survive while having time to spare, it would be difficult to manage the masses to continue to collect the resources for the powerful people who seek the truth. Hence it is imperative to distract us with media. It's almost very unlikely that such an organisation doesn't exist. But I suppose it's not so villainous of an organisation doing what should be obvious for any intelligent being, let alone when there are billions of intelligent beings
