Spokane Valley Mass Timber pitches eco-friendly, easy-to-build townhomes

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- What if you could build a home in half the time that's also better for the environment and more affordable? That's the goal of one Seattle-based developer.
On Wednesday, Washington's Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz visited the Spokane Valley Mass Timber Facility that is producing the products to do just that.
The developers behind this project say they can build a townhouse in less than 100 days, and it's the start of a long-awaited partnership between Mass Timber and Mercer to create affordable homes, faster.
The homes are more eco-friendly than a typical home. You can almost think of it like 3D printing a home with Mass Timber and assembling it on your land.
Developers say there is no one solution to the current housing crisis, but they hope this can be a step in the right direction.
"If you think about all the wood that is in this building, it's like a carbon battery. We are taking it out of the environment and storing it so that it's not burnt, not wasted, not rotting and releasing methane and we are designing these buildings to last over 100 years. 150 years is our target," said developer Darrin Griechen.
During Wednesday's tour of the Mercer facility, Commissioner Franz said these homes are addressing two big crisis' that go hand-in-hand: the crisis of forest health, and a crisis of affordable and available housing in the area.
"Now, we have been able to take that environmental challenge of dying, dead, diseased trees that burn into the atmosphere and turn it into a wood product that can actually make our environment cleaner and greener and truly build on the faster pace and scale the kinds of homes we need to address the housing crisis," Franz said.
Now, developers are starting to roll out these homes on the west side of the state and the west coast, but they're also looking for opportunities in Spokane to develop things like apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes in the near future.
