I dont mean to alarm you but the toupeé you're holding seems to be having an existential crisis

Now that I'm a mom... Watching my toddler paint has somehow liberated me and kind of gave myself permission to draw or paint whatever without being too critical of myself. It is the first time in my life where i feel it is ok to make "mistakes" or must have some kind of goals when i finish drawing.

I agree! And there's something very pretentious about painting something just so it can have this deep profound meaning behind it. Unless you genuinely feel connected to that thing, is it really worth painting something just so that you can sound profound?

I love your piggie! I have 2! They are my paint piggies and studio buddies. They are the best!

Thank you for this, I love this opinion. And your guinea pig is so precious!

Yes ok. But what do you put in your artist's statement? Is that a dumb question?

Wait, I thought to be contemporary, I needed to make obtuse overblown social studies diorama installations. You say I don't!?

Very important advice, thank you Professor for reminding us. Take care.

I wish you would also talk about shallow, stupid, silly, & decorative art, not just deep or mundane.

I was showing someone my pictures the other day, this person kept asking What did you feel when you were painting that? I don't know. I paint to zone out. I'm primarily a writer, if I wanted to express deep or meaningful ideas I would write them down, I definitely would not try and express them as paintings 🤪

I am so thankful right now. I was struggling with this my whole life and lately especially. I was preparing for an exhibition and felt like at least I had to be the smartest artist in the room if I have no education. After seeing other works I realised I am not the skillest nor the smartest one. It hit hard 😅 but fortunately I matured a bit and can take it and go on, first, and have resources like yours. So, again - I am so grateful for your work now. Thank you 💗💗💗

True! Wether your art has a profound meaning or just mundane, if it makes you feel good. Just do it.

You are so right! When I read the catalogue description o some, I am left wondering "what does that have to do with the art I am seeing on the walls?". I am talking about living artists, not old masters in small, community spaces.

I'm just here for an okay time, who even has the energy to worry about if their art is deep enough.

Style in itself is profound, I believe.
Maybe it does sound pretentious... but there are deeper reasons why we choose the the subjects we do, the mediums we do, and explore the styles we do.
A friend of mine is a collage artist who arranges every single scrap so carefully, perfectly, meticulously on the page. Like a grid. The colors are so exquisitely chosen. Hundreds of scraps from the last 200 years of papers, and they all match in theme and color scheme, arranged perfectly on the page. Like a quilt. It doesn't have any meaning other than she enjoys doing it.

My art, in comparison is messy, chaotic, exploratory, experimental, always searching out new materials, found objects, recycled bits, and finding the outcome I finally settle on.

And I learn something new, but it's not a commentary on society.

Maybe one could say that my friend is putting the pieces back together in a chaotic life. And I'm making a mess of an otherwise too-quiet life. But, that's really for the viewer to place their own perceptions on the work, no?

As an artist, I work with the mindset that the mundane can actually be a beautiful thing. Also, hi guinea pig (name?)!! 🥰

I love this I was just thinking about this! But does my art need to be “deep” if I want to enter an MFA?
