All jokes aside, what's really sad is that Shrek actually had much better character development in just his first movie alone than Rey did in an entire trilogy.

In one film alone, Shrek goes from being a grumpy, pessimistic ogre who learns to open up to others, and proves to all of the other fairy tale creatures that there is no need to fear him. He becomes a hero to the people, and learns how to be more generous and forgiving with others. The film as a whole also presents a beautiful message that no matter how different you may be, everyone deserves to love and be loved. It encourages its audience to not judge a book by its cover. In a time where everyone is extremely self-conscious about their looks and beauty, it's a message that we all really need to hear right now.

On the contrary, Rey is a nobody from a desert planet. It's interesting to see her as a scavenger on Jakku, but after the Star Destroyer scene from TFA, we never see her use her scavenging abilities ever again in any of the other movies. She's given no personality whatsoever. We don't see what her likes or interests are, what she fears, what she wants. We get a few decent lines from her ("I never knew there was this much green in the Galaxy") but the writers fail at SHOWING us who she is. One or two good lines is not enough for us to enjoy her as a character. We need to learn about her through her actions and choices. All we know about her is that she wants to find out who her parents were, but why? Why does she want to find her parents so bad? The audience never knows. Besides, we've seen many characters go through this arc in other movies as well, what makes Rey stand out from any of them? Nothing. If this wasn't a Star Wars movie with ships and lightsabers, her character would be absolutely forgettable.

By the end of TROS, she doesn't change as a character at all whatsoever. She's the exact same person that we met at the start of TFA.

Not to mention that her character arc gives multiple negative messages to the audience. For one, it serves as the opposite of toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity in films degrades men who aren't strong or masculine enough. Here, it gives its female audience an unfair bar to reach. It tells women that they have to be strong no matter what. They have to be perfect. They can't express any fear, any sadness, any discouragement, or go through any problems whatsoever. It gives its female audience an impossible bar to reach up to. No man or woman is perfect. If anything, these movies make women and others feel worse about themselves. It also tells us that you are a nobody unless you are related to someone of importance by forcing her to be related to Palpatine. She would have been better off being her own character.
