Many people consider For Whom the Bell Tolls an American masterpiece. I found it more of a boresterpiece.

One of my first Hemingway novels. I thought it was simply fantastic. The combination of the inside, and into all them, military maneuvers, the internal dialogues, the romance, the immersion into the Spanish spirit. Really worked for me.

This was one of the books I've read while in the hospital and Hemingway is one my favorite authors. Great video!

If you haven’t read East of Eden by John Steinbeck, you must check it out. It is considered one of the greatest American novels. Steinbeck was given the Nobel prize for literature in about 1962.

Everything I think about what I've read so far you've put perfectly into words

The book also has some dramatic language. Hemingway was in Spain reporting on the war against Franco. Hemingway is famous because of the iceberg rule mostly: 90% of the meaning is between the lines or under the surface. Amazing writer.

Read F Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby", I'm Not sure if you'll like the the theme but his writing style flows nicely.

I read a spanish translation of this one, long time ago. I think is one of the best novels/books about the Spanish Civil War.

You weren’t as harsh as I expected and thanks for explaining about the Spanish to English translations- that was getting on my nerves

I just finished it and I have exactly the same impression. I understand English but I read it in Spanish because it is my first language. Very elegantly written but extremely slow and in 85% of the story nothing happens. Very long character flashbacks with unnecessary details. It took me about a month to finish it as I was often bored. If we take 1/3 from the book, we don't hurt it.

It's interesting that during the Spanish Civil War those who fought for Spain were called "Fascists". Those who fought against Spain were called "Socialists". Ernest Hemingway was fighting against Spain, I presume. He was on the side of the Soviet "Red Brigades" set up by the Russian Communists.
