I am doing experiments at the moment in my garden, my holes are only pin hole size and it works, hot summer over here in Cape Town, South Africa.

I have seen other videos that use a plastic bottle, but they do not cut the bottom off. They simply put one or two small holes in the bottom, fill the container, placing the cap back on. This creates a vacuum in the bottle, which only allows the water to dribble out of the bottle, thereby slowly watering the pot over a long period of time. At the very least, the pot will not go dry. In addition, I believe mulch was used in the pot, to avoid the soil drying out too quickly...especially on hot windy days.

What about adding little sponge pieces in the holes or used tea bags so the water won't drain so quickly?

maybe you had too many and too large of holes in your water container.. i want to try the one with the string that drips water onto the soil slowly....no holes in the water jug, just a string that reaches the bottom of the water container and leads up to the plant supported by a toothpick and drips...have you seen this?

The main advantage of this for me is knowing how much water I’ve given my plants by knowing the bottle’s capacity.
I have killed sooo many plants by overwatering!

This would be good in the shade but the plastic heats the water really hot sooner than you might think. Kill your roots.
