Leros is an island at the southeastern end of the Aegean in the Dodecanese, northwest of Kalymnos, of which it is a continuation[1]. It has a population of 7,917 inhabitants (2011 census) and an area of 54 sq km, with a coastline that reaches 71 km, thanks to its strong horizontal fragmentation. The largest village (Agia Marina Lerou) has a population of 2,672, followed by Lakki with 1,990 inhabitants.
The town hall and other services are in Platanos. Leros is one of the Greek islands that have not yet been burdened by mass tourism. Its main tourist area is Alinda, other interesting villages are the fishing village of Panteli, Vromolithos with its beach, Gourna, Xirokambos, Partheni and Blefoutis. The Castle of Panagia, built in the eleventh century, dominates the mountain Apitiki above Platanos and directly opposite is the key highest point of the island with a panoramic view. The war museum of Leros is located in Merikia, built inside a tunnel from the Second World War.
