I love the mermaid knife shade throwing very subtle. Knife Center has the best knife YouTube channel.

The answer to the first question just proves DCA’s knowledge and expertise. Excellent as always. 👍

A fixed blade in my experience is still the best one hand opening knife.

The RAT 1 or 2 has a good crisp spine and is economical. The 1 might be a little heavy but the 2 is pretty light.

Byrd Knives are good one hand openers with sharp spines and most have tall flat grinds great for food prep. Pretty cheap and lightweight weight too. Great for carrying backpacking and if you lose it in the woods you won't freak out.

Wish there was a blade style search right up front when I open shop folding knives. Can select lock type and blade steel. Wish there was a way to just search a blade style like sheepsfoot and then get to see all the options available. Keep up the great vids!

For camping a fixed blade always seems so much easier and more functional, but I also carry a Svord Peasant. For a backup camping knife it is great. Easy to take apart and clean, thin yet tough blade for food prep and utility cutting, you can strike a ferro rod on the spine or tang (again, I'd use a fixed blade over any folding knife here), etc. It isn't a universal tool or knife, but for camping I like it better than the Opinel.

One hand opening with crisp spine and cheap: rat 2

For the camper, Ontario RATs are a pretty great option. The satin blades have super crisp spines, and with D2 / Aus-8 can pick between more edge retention or more stain resistance. I also think it has amazing opening action for the price point and construction.

I have three Byrd knives and all three have crisp corners on the lock bar, plus you don't have to worry about a sharpened edge being exposed while striking.

Ahhh yes, you calling the Boker Mermaid a doofus knife is satisfying.

DCA - great chuckles, best yet. I loved the review on your site of the Carcass Splitter. A little overkill for the deer I hunt but I can see using it on a moose.

The Cold Steel SR1 out of the box has a crisp spine and can strike a ferro rod. At least the one I have does. I have the s35 clip point model. I know it’s a large folder. Especially compared to the dossier and opinel. It also may not be the best option for food prep due to blade geometry and just sheer thickness. But it can do the job. Just thought I’d mention this option

For one hand opening and a spine so crisp it can cut you try a Cold Steel Code 4. S35vn, too. Very slim, one hand closing, and just a very comfy and somewhat elegant looking knife considering it's inherent toughness and proportions.

Thanks, Mr. Andersen. I find that when putting a sharp spine on knives, a bastard file works pretty well, most of the time.

I love how he low-key called out all of Blade HQ for being a Doofus as they hold the mermaid in very high esteem

"Feldspar large" one of my favorites still !!

Strange, I never really thought about it, and it never dawned on me until now, but the Spyderco Tenacious and OKC Rat 1 seem very similar. I own some Rat's for sure and love the thumb studs vs the Spydie hole:) The jimping looks identical too:)
