Here's a little trick I use when I come up against a gap that's a tad to big.
My names Matt Urch and I own and run Urchfab welding and fabrication.
I specialise in custom automotive fabrication from building roll cages to complete one off builds.
I built the worlds most unique and oldest drift car known as the drift rod which can be found on my channel.
So if your into grinding, welding, fabricating, drifting, going fast etc, your in the right place!

Very good advice!!! I have to do this daily at work on 1/8” & 3/8” steel. It even works for aluminum mig.

Thank you for the helpful tips. You really break down situations and give great fixes to things I run into often.

Sound practical tips there mate, for those that don't have any TIG rod, you can knock the flux off stick welding rods and stuff that in -get a small pack of 6013s from DIY store if you need to.
Cracking welds again, .

The charm of your videos is you know exactly what your doing but find it difficult to put it into words which makes them good.. In a good way. Love watching man.

I’m attempting to weld my exhaust, I’m 17 this is my first time touching a Welder lol, Literally just looks like spatter... I’ll grind it and re try tomorrow lol but a thin aluminum exhaust is not ideal for my first time

Thats a dope trick actually... I had seen a welder who worked on my car use a similar "bridging technique" where he just built up a bead of weld like a mountain and then stacked it up enough where it would connect the two pieces..

Thanks Matt...and what I have noticed are the other techniques mentioned in the comments are constructive and worthy of study in their own right...Not many channels that have that. Keep up the stream of information..learning every time I watch...and read below....

Thanks.... Overhead gaps ?? The same technique?

But how are you bridging the gap? Are you stacking the weld to make the bridge to the other side? When you are welding each of the tacks it sounds like one continuous weld so how are you making the bridge without having the weld spatter and fall through?

Excellent video. I just have one question. I noticed that after tacking the welds you went right in and did the full run. Is it a good idea to take a wire brush to the tacks before making the completed weld. I just thought that making the area clean would allow for a better weld. I am a hobby welder so I really don't know if it would help. I really like your videos. Thanks

I work at a shop where the fit ups are usually bullshit. Running a tac or "finger" across is a very helpful strat (if I cant walk and retreat with my weld pool and use that to get by)

Id get a decent sized tack built up then turn it sideways and run it vertically. As a production welder this is actually more common than the pieces properly fitting together lol.

I normally just put C across the gap until its full

I've done gaps bigger than that and my method was pulling and making C's trying to keep the wire hitting the lead of the puddle but not too far that it misses. It worked for me and this was on MIG 0.35 225 wire speed and 18.5 volts iirc

No tacking or anything
