I am a physician, and there's so much need for nurses everywhere that it doesn't matter at all where you graduate from. I have NEVER EVER asked a nurse where they have graduated from. It would be such a waste of money to go to a more expensive school.

I went to a cheap community college for my RN program, and then the hospital paid for my RN to BSN program.
I make 150k annually and I am debt free. :)

My mom had no money to pay for my school but she had ambition. We saved every penny we had. She told me community college was the way and I listened. After applying for scholarships and hard work I graduated as an RN at 23 yrs old DEBT FREE while working a part-time job. Now I take my mom to nice dinners while I make good money. Also, my hospital pays for my BSN - again, debt free! Let me talk some sense to your daughter! I’ll be happy to!

The mom probably just wanted to brag to her friends about her kid getting into a prestigious university.

Our son went to a community college for his degree to become an x-ray tech. His Mom and I paid his tuition, but required him to pay for his books and lab which he got a part time job washing dishes to pay for them. Four years later he graduated with zero debt!...A great way to start out your adult radiology degree with zero debt.

Imagine getting a full ride through community college thanks to your dad AND your step-mom... but your biological mom is tempting you into expensive schools and a giant student loan. WILD!!!

I started out at a community college, and ultimately earned a PhD from a Big Ten university. You are not missing out on life by attending a community college. It instead gave me a solid foundation for the rest of my education.

I went to community college first and finished my RN with 7k in loans. I paid out of pocket for the prerequisite stage using a payment plan. I had 9.50/hr job. I took loans for the program part so I could focus on school. Cleared the loan first year as a nurse then did my bachelor's online for 10k out of pocket. That was easy with RN pay. I fail to understand when my coworkers tell me they have 60k student loans .

I’ve been under the care of a lot of great RNs in my life. I never once asked where any of them went to nursing school.

I work at a community a college in Tennessee and help students receive the Tennessee Promise scholarship. Between the Federal Pell Grant, HOPE Scholarship, and Tennessee Promise, students in Tennessee have the ability to attend community college tuition free if they meet all requirements and meet all the deadlines. Most of our students transfer to the major state university right down the road and continue on to receive their bachelors. Community colleges have a negative stigma attached to them, but they are a very smart financial decision.

My friends thought I was crazy to go to a community college straight out of high school, even though I had the grades to go to a really good university. Got my associates for basically free (I think I paid $1k in tuition out of pocket) and then transferred to a state school. Got my BS with only $14k in loans, and paid those back before my first scheduled payment. All this propaganda going around saying that "community college is for poor people and rejects" is designed to keep people in debt.

I got my associates degree at a community college and then transferred to a state university for my bachelors. I graduated with 15k in loans, and thankfully was able to pay it off within a year. I am so glad that I chose that route, as most of my fellow classmates who went straight to a 4-year university graduated with over 50k in loans. I don't understand why community college is looked down upon. It's a great, cheaper option. Most people I know took the same prerequisites as me but just paid double (some even triple) just to get the "college experience".

RN here (32 years) take my advice- don’t go in debt for your degree!!! Dave is 100% right!!

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a CC. Both my girls went that route and then transferred to Baylor University, which is $70k a year. You can save SO much money by going to a CC first.

Starting at a technical college was one of the best decisions I/my parents made. Saved so much money but also learned way more because I was hands on, I was way ahead of my peers when I transferred to a traditional undergrad.

Especially for nursing! Local colleges is more than enough. No need for expensive private college! Teaching is exactly the same!

Community College was a godsend for me. I went two years to Community College, and then transferred to University with 80% of my tuition loan paid upon graduation. I would not have been able to do this all four years at University.

Take it from a RN with a BSN from a college. I am 40 and I owe a lot of student loans for it. I lived in a state at the time that did not offer an associate degree. When I finished they finally did. But after getting my license and moving to another state started to work as an RN. I have the past 10 years watching Associate Degree nurses making as much as me and then going back to get their BSN. I managed to injure my back that has put me out of floor nursing. All the while owing all these student loans. The smarter way to get your RN is the community college. Then if you want to get your BSN, get it later. Most of these hospitals pay tuition reimbursement. She could get her Degree free between her dad and tuition reimbursement from her job. Don’t go the big college route.

Yes, have a working RN explain nursing to her. I am a retired RN and have seen so many kids go through nursing programs of all sorts. First you get the associate nursing degree (ADN) from the community college. Then you take your RN board exam and pass. Then you get a job as a RN. Next, if you want it, you have the hospital pay for your tuition while you work for them as a RN, and you get a BSN. Nursing is so versatile and you have no need or incentive to rack up debt if you are smart and willing to work hard.

No—get her to talk to a 27 year old RN graduate in student debt…that girl will talk more sense into her than a 50 year old
