Spidey also HATED that power when he had it. One of the more interesting things about that arc was his adverse reaction to gaining more power. His mantra of "with great power comes great responsibility" is one he employs out of a sense of guilt and obligation. If there is something that happened that he could have conceivably stopped with his abilities, then he will feel responsible for not doing anything. However he took solace, even if it was subconsciously, that some threats were beyond his ability as Spider-Man, and thus were not his responsibility. He never felt obligated to go after Dark Phoenix or similarly powered beings because there was nothing he could do against them.

While he had the power cosmic however, those allowances he gave himself to not feel guilty about super powered threats he couldn't handle fell away. Suddenly he had so much power that the weight of EVERYTHING was on his shoulders. He could barely function while he was that powerful because he was utterly terrified of the responsibility attached to it.

Definitely one of the more revealing arcs about his character, I personally quite enjoyed it when I read them as a kid.

I wonder if the Captain Universe power is limited by the host's problem-solving ability? Adult Peter Parker is a PhD bio-geneticist with a specialty in human mutation. And a concentration in genetics means a _ton_ of organic chemistry knowledge. Meaning that if Spidey understood how to manipulate the X gene, he could recreate all the powers of every mutant in the Marvel universe, and then some.

Doctor Doom on the other hand is a strategist and a cyberneticicst. Matt Murdock is a lawyer and mixed martial artist. They would take fundamentally different approaches to wielding that kind of power.

Luckily Spider-Man is probably the only character in Marvel that could actually be trusted with that level of cosmic power for any significant amount of time.

I remember actually first seeing Captain Universe Spider-Man as an alternate costume in the old Spider-Man game. I saw him and was like "What the hell is this?!?!" and then went and discovered all the awesomeness me ruined in this video on my own. Good times. ~_~
