There are other planetary systems within habitable zones like Earth's .These are where the distances allow for some form of life.

Life has multiple forms to manifest. A bacteria is a form of life. An algae is a form of life. An extra-terrestrial being similar to us is also a form of life. Etc.
So extra-terrestrial life doesn't necessarily mean extra-terrestrial being (humanoid) like us.
Even, the expansion of the universe is a manifestation of life. So life is everywhere, and the universe is crowded by multiple forms of life.
