U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday, Dec. 2, that the country would begin distributing the new Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine next week, with the first phase covering vulnerable people such as long-term care home residents, “health and care staff” and the elderly.

Officials cautioned that vaccination of even the country’s most vulnerable people could “take months” and that roll-out of the vaccine would be a major logistical undertaking.

“Even if you gave 60 million vaccines here in this corner now… no system in the world could distribute those really, really quickly – in a matter of a few days,” said Britain’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam.

Britain became the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer –BioNTech coronavirus vaccine candidate Wednesday.

Britain has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine and it was initially estimated it would receive 10 million of those doses by the end of the year. However, BioNTech’s chief business offer told BBC it’s more likely to be about five million “or a little more.”
