Welcome back to our YouTube channel. In this video, we will be learning about what is multiplication. Repeated addition and equal groups
Science Bytes are short math videos that can help you remember math concepts and facts. They are an excellent tool for anyone who wants to learn and explore.
Did you know that multiplication is the same as repeated addition?
When we multiply we are creating groups of a certain quantity to find a total
For example, 3 times 4 is the same as 3 groups of 4 which we know is equal to 12.
To find the total, we can count by 4 three times, we can add 4 plus 4 plus 4, or we can recall the multiplication fact we memorized.
All of these methods will take us to the total.
But did you know that understanding what multiplication is can help us even when we forget our multiplication facts?
For example, I may have forgotten and not memorized the multiplication fact of three times 4 but I might remember that two times four is 8 and if I understand that multiplication is repeated addition.
Then I know that three times four is the same as three groups of fours so I just need to add one more group of 4 to find my total which is 12.
When we multiply we are simply creating groups of a certain number. 3x5 is the same as three groups of 5 which is the same as counting by 5 three times, adding 5 plus 5 plus 5 or remembering my multiplication fact of three times 5 which is 15.
