Coldplay: Top 10 Songs (x3)

People really do not like Coldplay.

Except for those first couple of albums anyway. You know, from Parachutes to Viva La Vida.

Many people are upset by the band's "evolution" from Mylo Xyloto to the latest album, Music of the Spheres.

But we still have the memories of the time when Coldplay was both excellent and critically acclaimed and wildly popular.

Here's our list of favorite songs. Don't worry about listening to their whole discography, you won't need those last four albums where we're going.

The only real question is, how many tracks from Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y and Viva La Vida can we get on here? Will anything from a later album make the grade?

I know everyone has different opinions but im very confident that none of these are controversial picks i think these are all definitive bangers, i only fell in love with square one tho because of the live performances, theres just so much energy in those performances and it always pumps me up

10 Arabesque (E Life) 9 lovely almost rock synth trumpeting underlines a string centre to this good album.
9 Trouble In Town (E Life) 9 woah looking for a decent new song that will get you into a recent Coldplay album? Here it is. Jazz lounge jamming and warped synths? Yes please.👏
8 Talk (X+Y) 9 Computer Love part 2 is great song too. A clever giant robot metaphor on video lol.🤦.
7 Square One (X+Y) catchy opener surely not?
6 Politik (AROBTTH) 9.5 one of my faves. Probably because of it's clean Radiohead vibes.
5 Daylight (AROBTTH) 9.5 overlooked really lurvly groove with Arabic glints.
4 A Rush of Blood To The Head (title track 9.5 exentuates the whole record near end.
3 The Scientist 10 (AROBTTH) the video still gets me. Their best. Great song.
2 Speed Of Sound (X+Y) 10 Clocks pt3 Hey cmon the formula is great. If it ain't broke... Also I like the drift background chords alot.

24 Daddy (E Life) 8 another good example of the overtly emotive working really well. Not since first 3 albums have they matches this level.
25 Green Eyes (AROBTTH) 8 nice acoustic chirpy ballad.
26 BrokEn (E Life) 8 this lovely churchy blues number made me wish it really was a rendition of Morning Has Broken ala Cat Stevens. It's great though.
27 Orphans (E Life) 8 lovely example of live but well produced feel song on a rare consistently engaging record.

36 Cemeteries of London (Viva la Vida) 7 smooth ride that offers something different thematically. Works well along with opening instrumental

41 A Sky Full of Stars (GS) 7 a decent stadium anthem. But these songs are so sentimental it grates quickly.
42 My Universe (MofS) another annoyingly uplifting stadium anthem. Oops I'm repeating myself. 🤦
43 A Hymn For The Weekend (AHFOD) 7 another wall of synth oh oh a oh oh anthem designed for stadiums that works.

Just wanted to also mention Coldplays live abilities I think have been ignored a bit. I think it's their ability to create a harmonious spectacle and entertain that works best....not their albums or artistry....like them or not.🧐

I consider myself a fan but I have so few deep cuts.
1. Green Eyes - so happy to see this on all 3 lists.
2. Moses - love the atmospherics on this live cut. Always felt this one deserved more love.
3. Clocks - for me the ultimate headphones song. Give me some headphones with a huge soundstage and I just get lost in the atmospherics.
