Tito Puente was a Puerto Rican musician, composer, and bandleader known for his contributions to Latin jazz and salsa music. He was born on April 20, 1923, in New York City and grew up in Spanish Harlem. He began playing the drums at a young age and went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music. He served in the Navy during World War II and later formed his own band, which became very popular in the Latin music scene. Puente recorded over 100 albums throughout his career and won numerous Grammy Awards. He died on May 31, 2000, at the age of 77.
