The “if my standing slips I’ll lose how I’m defined” hit way too hard. I was in gifted and most of my childhood was spent making sure I was the best at everything, because if I was the the best then I might not be the smart kid and if I’m not the smart kid then I was nobody. This also gave me an absolute hatred of anything competitive, because the fear of losing was far too great to play.

My giftedness just kind of stopped when I started seriously having depression as a pre-teen and nobody really noticed. I'm now finishing my third year of college and nobody notices that I'm not exceptionally smart at anything anymore except for the people who I confided in, who clearly don't understand what I was trying to convey. Literally just a phone addict now.

"Did I take my gift for granted"
Damn. I might not have been the best, but I was better, it was so easy, it was natural, it felt like it was natural for me to always be the in a good position, to always be high achieving. Then slowly or suddenly one day I had to try. Now not even the panic monster is helping much

This actually hits hard for me because I used to speak 9 languages fluently and more pretty damn proficiently, until I got a TBI and got memory loss so bad I can’t even speak english well anymore 😅 I think some of the reason I lost the languages was just burn out and depression though compounded with that fact. French stayed for a while after the TBI after all, but I lost that too after a while. I’m trying to get back into learning languages again starting with Japanese though

I grew up gifted and fell off when I was a teenager in a lot of ways, but my foundation set me up, as an adult I invest free time into self driven studies on subjects like linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. I think often we hold ourselves back the most, and I hope anyone reading this takes the time to invest energy learning about their passions for themself first

Working with families with 8+ languages I don't speak at all I gotta say, while Google translator makes mistakes all the time, it saved my ass countless times

My son was doing multiplication right before 1st grade his teacher told him he is not allowed to be a head of the class and couldn't do extra quit work alone (he was obsessed with math) ever since then he didn't care about school anymore. He was failing this year, so I said, "You get A's you get game time you get F's you lose game time." Not even a month later, he went from F's and D's to A's and B's. He's still gifted, but the joy of it was gone. Now he knows if he works hard, he'll get something out of instead of disappointment and nagging. My sister in law used to speak 7 languages now she only uses the ones that mean anything. German with my Dad, French with my mom, Spanish with her mom, all the rest have no purpose or joy, so why bother.

Point is you have to want to keep your brain active in that way, just like any other muscle.

It’s always the gifted kids who end up with Cs and Ds in high school. (I know from experience)

Gifted kid, used to be a people pleaser until I realized very few people mattered enough to me to actually care what they think 🙏

I was gifted once. They gave me drugs, illegal drugs. Now I'm sober. Sadly I couldn't retain my giftedness. I'm just a regular everyday normal Skyrim nerd now .

It’s almost like “gifted” as a concept doesn’t actually exist and sometimes kids just pick stuff up quicker than other kids

Gifted children that are then put in gifted classes often end up burnt out. Its quite common.
