Rotating a layer, or two layers, is hard to do with your thumb.

Another idea is to flip the entire cube 90 degrees and do the same rotation with your fingers.

You do that by holding your thumb on the center piece in front of you and have your middle finger on the center piece of the reverse side. Then you can spin the cube with your pointer finger.
