The Irish War of Independence (1919-1921)

At the beginning of the 20th century Irish republicans fought for their independence from the United Kingdom. Even though they were at the brink of loosing this guerrilla war the southern counties of Ireland gained de facto independence through the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The later Republic of Ireland became the Freestate within the British Empire. Six northern counties of the province Ulster opted to remained in the United Kingdom. The results of the Anglo-Irish Treaty should lead directly into the Irish Civil War in the south.
