We own a 2008 Aveo5 that we’ve owned since 2010 and it’s been a great little car. With 99k miles on it, the only things that have gone wrong are an oil leak that was an easily replaced gasket and a wire that shorted out on the A/C, a cheap, simple repair. Otherwise, it’s started every time without fail, has no creaks or rattles, and still feels solid.

We’ve taken it to Canada, across the country, and on numerous other trips, and no complaints. We do have the base model and I do wish it did have cruise control for those boring long stretches.

Overall, it filled our need for a cheap, basic car and has exceeded them. Not only has it been reliable, but it’s very roomy for my 6’5’’ frame and equally tall husband, has solid performance from the engine, the ride is well damped, NVH are pretty well hushed, offers a generous greenhouse with plenty of visibility, and the practicality of the cargo area offers a lot of space. I used to own a 2015 Honda Fit and it felt like a rough riding, sluggish, noisy, and cramped (in the front seats) penalty box compared to the Aveo.

I even like the styling; it’s upright, chunky, and the interior has a funky, circular theme reminiscent of a Beetle or Mini.

It’s not all perfect; the steering is pretty vague and that soft suspension does create some body roll in turns, the fuel economy could be better for a small car (we average 34mpg on highway runs), and the timing belts on these should be religiously replaced every 60k miles, as recommended in the owner’s manual.

Before anyone dismisses me as some kook who never drives anything else; I’ve driven Tesla’s over a cumulative 25k miles for my job, desire to own a Chevy SS one day, and have driven hundreds of cars for fun or as rentals, plus own everything in size from a Daihatsu Charade to a Ford Explorer.

But I appreciate the Aveo for what it is and it does its job very well as a dependable, honest to goodness, affordable runabout.

I have a 2010 Aveo with almost on her. She's an absolute beater and surprisingly great in winter weather.

I was going to get a Honda VTX 1300t, but for around the same price I got the Aveo5.
300 more CC, a roof and 2 more tires.
More room than a "Smart." Pretty zippy with the manual trans. OnStar and a place to plug in the IPod.
My spouse loves it and wants one now as well.
I purposely got the Tahiti Green too!
(a color known by other names but limited time offered on the Aveo - June- Oct. '08 produced '09s)

@fenix144 "zippy" is a relative term, I'm not saying you're going to "shut down" anyone with an Aveo but that's not what I'm after. No, it's not like some of our former cars nor is it close in quickness even to my Honda Silverwing, however, it is not lacking in the type of performance I require of it. I understand the same car with an automatic trans leaves a lot to be desired.

10 years later I gotta tell you my friend bought a fit and I bought a aveo5 brand new only 7miles on the dashboard my friends fit had 3 miles on the odometer well long story short within 5 years the fit alternator went the radiator leaked thermostat went and transmission clutch had to be replaced my friend sold the Fit, mean while I still drive my aveo every day I did had to change brake disc tho other that that the aveo is far superior than the fit 🤷‍♂️

What a horrid car, truly dreadful. I'd take a Fit/Jazz instead!!
