Reading these quotes daily will protect your mind from many sorrows and difficulties caused by identification with the flow of thoughts:

"Your nature is Peace and Happiness. Thoughts are the obstacles to realisation. One’s meditation or concentration is meant to get rid of obstacles and not to gain the Self. So, a thought must be quelled as soon as it rises. Whenever a thought arises, do not be carried away by it." [1]

"If you go the way of your thoughts, you will be carried away by them and you will find yourself in an endless maze." [2]

"All thoughts are sorrowful, because thoughts take one’s attention away from the Self (awareness of awareness itself), which is undiluted Happiness." [3]

"If you have any desires or attachments, thoughts about them will be constantly appearing in the mind. You cannot fight them because they thrive on the attention you give them. If you try to repress them, you can only do it by giving them attention. And that means identifying with the mind. This method never works. You can only stop the flow of thoughts by refusing to have any interest in it." [4]

"The only way you will ever awaken is through silence, not through analyzation of facts. Not by sorting out good and bad, but through simple silence, letting go. Letting go of all thoughts, all the hurts, all the dogmas and concepts. Letting go of these things daily." [5]

Read Q&A below:

"When the mind moves (in the form of thought) even a little, that is samsara (worldly bondage); when the mind abides firmly and motionless (in the awareness of the Self) that is mukti (liberation). This is certain. Therefore know that the wise man must hold his mind firm by supreme Self-awareness." ~ Lord Shiva (Sri Devikalottara - Jnanahara Vichara Patalah; Rendered into Tamil by Sri Ramana Maharshi)

Q: But, how to live in this world without thinking?

A: Think when it is necessary; otherwise, keep the mind quiet to avoid distraction and suffering.

Q: Well, what about positive thoughts?

A: "All thoughts are sorrowful, because thoughts take one’s attention away from the Self, which is undiluted Happiness." ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi (Guru Ramana, by S.S. Cohen)

Q: How not to be interested in thoughts?

A: By using our power of discrimination, we can recognize that the objects of our thoughts are transitory — they come and go, leaving us in suffering. If we develop this ability to see through to the end, we naturally become disinterested in our thoughts.

Q: Are there any practices to keep the mind quiet?

A: Essentially, all spiritual practices are meant to quieten the mind. There are many practices available for this purpose, such as fixing our attention on the awareness of the Self through enquiry; if that is difficult, we can fix our attention on the awareness of breath; if that is also difficult, we can connect our breath with mental repetition of a Mantra like So(in) Ham(out) or Aum(in) Namashivaya(out) — preferably given by a guru — or we can choose something as simple as I(in)AM(out), and through long and persistent practice, Self-awareness will arise spontaneously along with the automatic disappearance of the Mantra.

Another practice is by keeping one's attention fixed on the Ajna (point between the eyebrows); similarly, one can focus on the Anahata (middle of the chest, or a point just beneath where the rib cage meets). Such practices are very effective in curbing the outgoing tendency of the mind.

If you have trouble keeping your mind quiet, you can choose one of these practices that you feel comfortable with, which is natural for you. It will help to keep the mind quiet whenever thoughts are not necessary for the smooth running of your life. 🙏
