Grafting is a common technique in horticulture to improve plants. Examples of this include combining tomatoes and potatoes for more yield in less space. With bonsai grafting is more specific and targeted. E.g, ;Taking foliage from one species and using it to replace another.

In some cases grafting is a very good way to get growth on a plant that is slow growing, damaged or difficult to handle. From this you can get very quick and impressive results. Conversely you can also get very quick and unimpressive results that take a long time to correct.

This first video looks at cleft grafts and how this technique was utilised badly with fig trees. Than it looks at one way in which this problem can be fixed.
