We went the other way round last year. Biggest mistake of our trip. We spent the whole day queueing! The weather got worse as the day went by, and it was getting dark when we finally crossed the lake. And then more endless queues for the buses as night was falling! A rather stressful experience, especially when I realized the bus service stopped at 6 PM! We finally caught one without knowing its destination, and were back in Tokyo well after 9 PM. Never again.

Which trains do you suggest and did you have to transfer?
Were all the beautiful places within walking distance of a train station or were there special buses? What an excellent day trip!
