Voice narration by Bif Naked
Over a century of drug prohibition has caused over a century of harm, culminating in more than 23,000 overdose/drug poisoning deaths in Canada at time of writing. Police themselves admit that society cannot “arrest itself out of this problem.” Criminalizing people who use drugs only intensifies the cycle of harm and is an expensive waste of taxpayer funds. Criminalization fails to address the root causes of substance use disorder and only makes the situation worse for people who use drugs. An approach grounded in human rights and public health would end the harms, stop the deaths, and improve communities for everyone.
