After a controversial Contest in 2024, could EUROVISION 2025 face some real jeopardy and even be CANCELLED? Because it seems like some political parties and even individuals wish for it to be, or even just to be hindered in some way...

People, it won't get canceled because of lack of money. We are talking about Switzerland.

Switzerland is just a semi-direct democracy. We vote 4 times a year on multiple referdums. Every street that has to be repaired, every tree that is planted in a public park, every school that has to be built. We do not only vote for big things like healthcare or gay marriage. We vote on EVERYTHING. And if there really is no public funding, the broadcaster will find the money. Every event organization has a plan B from the start. It's absolutely normal that there are referendums.

If Switzerland don't want to host it There's always Croatia...

I think Switzerland would do a fantastic job hosting in 2025, a merry "nul points" on the evangelical conservatives trying to stop it!

Zurich or Geneva sounds like the most sound proposed host cities out of all the bids. Biel/Berne does make sense as Nemo is from Biel, but their proposal is a bit too chaotic, and they're proposing a venue that doesn't exist yet is too risky. I'm leaning towards Zurich as everything proposed will be nearby. Although, do we really need a Turquoise carpet and the EuroClub? I always found them unnecessary. However, I think the Swiss will do a good job in the long run.

I'd be happy if they scale down the contest a bit, making it more cost effective. Perhaps that would make it easier for Cities to host and easier for Countries to take part in?

Ok swiss person here, first of all referendums are a really common thing in Switzerland. Also the swiss peoples party and the Democratic Union Party are both populist/extrem rightwing of which one is a fringe party. Also not everyone unanimously approving the contest is not surprising cause the swiss Peoples party is as previously stated anti Progressive, which in there opinion is not what Eurovision represents, paired with a general distrust in our national Broadcaster and them wanting to cut funding completely at one point.

CHF = Swiss Franc!

Abstention - not abstenation!

I would have liked it if Eurovision 2025 had been in Lugano

If the Swiss took that much time to decide, I think the EBU might move to a different country. Croatia came second and I'm sure Zagreb would be happy to host if Switzerland can't make it work.

It’s early enough to switch countries, maybe we do Croatia instead.

Not impossible. The US city of Denver bid succesfully for the 1976 Winter Olympics, but once the games had been secured, public and local political opposition on grounds of public expense and potential environmental damage resulted in a vote which went 60-40 (approx) against the staging, and the IOC had to move the event to Innsbruck, which had hosted 12 years earlier. The Games still went ahead though, as I'm sure the 2025 ESC will. Someone like the BBC would probably put on a reasonable last-minute rescue job in an emergency.

I think Zürich has the best and strongest bid out of all of them.

I'm not sure where Nemo is from but they did say in the Victory Press Conference that they weren't sure their city was big enough to host the event.

Fun bit of trivia about Switzerland's form of Direct Democracy: the women didn't get a vote until the 70s because every time the government put forward a proposal for women's suffrage, the voting men would hold a referendum against it. The last referendum in the 70s finally gave women the vote 😂

Anywho - Switzerland is indeed a rich country but they are also very particular about where the funding goes. So it's good that all these cantons, councils and government bodies are scrutinising where the funding will actually come from. (And people claim ESC isn't a political event - HA!)

Just for the record, Adam, the Swiss use referendums a lot in their system of governance. They are more of a direct demicracy than some other western countries, not even having a strong central government.

But yeah, foolish to hold a poll that long after the city would have been chosen. Not surprised Berne didn't make it into the shortlist, but it's nice to see it go to German Switzerland all the same.

Biel / Bienne is indeed the hometown of Nemo, although he currently lives in Berlin (Germany).

There was also a Eurovision-survey in Switzerland with 25.000 participants. 49 % of the participants aren't excited for the hosting.

It is also important to say that the EDU - UDF is (from what I've heard and read) pretty irrelevant in Switzerland, although their popularity is slightly on the rise. They got 1, 2 % of the popular vote in the 2023 general election and are only represented by one seat each of Bern (what a surprise!) and Zurich in the current swiss national assembly. Additionally, they are basically the only party currently present in the assembly that is closely tied to Israel, at least when it comes to their platform.

The SVP - UDC is the bigger factor in this topic I think. Another right-wing party which is also the strongest political force in Switzerland for decades, but this party is less religious than the EDU - UDF and some members of it do actually support some of the Eurovision-bids. In addition: The SVP - UDC is not the biggest party in Basel and Geneva (which is no surprise because the french cantons lean more to the left then the german cantons).

I kinda saw this drama coming since Switzerland won back in May, due to the direct-democracy-system in Switzerland. Which is, and this is just my opinion, a good thing, but it makes some decisions, as democratic as they are conducted, much harder.

i think that at this point, with all the pushback, croatia might have to start thinking about a very narrow possibility where they'll have to host because even if it doesn't seem like it might happen, there is always a chance

Considering the violent protests that broke out due to the participation of one certain country this year, I assume that many Swiss have second thoughts. There's is little ground to assume that it will be different this time around.

Btw, not many are aware that 2018 Eurovision in Tel Aviv hung on a string. First, Netanyahu wanted to close the public broadcaster KAN. Eurovision basically 'saved' it. Next, as an act of revenge, the government tried to block the budget. This also failed.

This both parties are far right parties. Yes, they are strong in the rural part of the Canton. You know, those parts foreigners see on Swiss postcard videos and always want to live there. Very conservative and against this spectacle of LGBTQ.
The cities of Biel and Bern have had a large left majority for decades and are very open.
Don't worry about these referendums. In Switzerland we vote on multiple issues every 3 months. We are a semi-direct democracy. The referendum is not a exceptional things. It's an every day political tool. Parties say they will make a referendum just to make a political statement.

You know, even if there would be no public funding, there will be enough money from sponsors. There are a lot of big enterprises that sponsor events like this.

And there is no way this referendum will get through. Because it will be an event televised worldwide and many of the conservative voters do not want Switzerland to be perceived as "cheap" and incompetent. The only thing I'm a little bit afraid of are people who are against capitalism and for the environment.
