During the scene where Leslie tells Jess about Janice’s home life, they walk to a swing by a tree house. While walking, you can notice Jess has a slight limp. This is actually because Josh Hutcherson developed stress fractures in his back from him playing too many sports and being too overactive during filming. Also, shooting was done in sequence, so for Josh Hutcherson to understand just how magical things his character was looking at, they created a scale from 1 to 10. They rated Jess’ view from the treetops at a level 10. On top of that, the five stages of grief are a key factor throughout the film, and they used that to help Josh focus his performance during later parts.

This movie is incredibly written and acted. The way life can just come at you and change everything is instant and it shows that. Plus not being able to coup or the things that run through you mind are so random. Plus showing what boys usually go through with fathers and a father watching his boy fall apart and HIS way of being able to comfort his son opposite from a mother is just amazing. Leslie touched everyone’s life and it was very well shown. Plus adding that the teacher you thought was mean was actually very very caring and she loved her students even if she dint show it. Plus adding the true grief of people saying condolences. But it not making you feel better. And that some people won’t care about someone’s death.(the bully) it was beautifully written and acted it’s like a therapist helped write the deep subtext

When I saw this as a kid I cried like a baby. I was 14 when this came out lol. It's just like the movie "my girl" when she dies, you just never see it coming and then you're hit like a ton of bricks.

Leslie’s death felt like getting your heart ripped out slammed onto the ground stomped on a few times and then shoved back into your chest, I didn’t know she was gonna die when I first watched the film sometimes you can tell when a character is gonna die but I didn’t know Leslie was gonna die and when she did it hurt a lot I grew so attached to her and Jess I cried a lot at her death scene ngl
