Police on High Alert as NLC Holds a Nationwide Protest

As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) prepares for a nationwide demonstration today to protest against the economic challenges facing the country, the police have deployed anti-riot squads and heightened security measures in strategic locations across the nation. This move comes amidst concerns over potential disruptions to public peace during the protests.

In a press briefing, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed state commissioners of police to ensure the safety of protesters while maintaining public order. Adejobi emphasised the importance of respecting the right to peaceful protest while warning against any attempts to disrupt public peace or hijack the demonstrations.

The NLC's demonstration is fueled by grievances stemming from the government's alleged failure to uphold agreements reached on October 2, 2023, particularly regarding the removal of the fuel subsidy. The protest serves as a platform for workers and citizens to voice their concerns over the economic strain gripping the nation and call for government action to address the challenges faced by the populace.
