Parallel Session 13, Bamboo structures

Edwin Gonzalez, María Guadalupe Estrada and Giancarlo Di Marco from Universidad de Las Americas Puebla (UDLAP) & Giancarlo di Marco Studio, present their work on parametric simulation.

At present, bamboo is one of the plants that presents several variables of its use, from the manufacture of textiles, furniture, medicines and of course the manufacture of structures for buildings. In Mexico there is a diversity of native species, 40 in total, species that are distributed in states like Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca, as well as Puebla, Tamaulipas and Michoacan, some of these states susceptible to hurricanes and/ or earthquakes. This presentation will show the importance of the use of bamboo as a structural material for the construction of rural homes in states like Oaxaca and Veracruz, as well as the versatility of its use for the construction of other types of buildings such as multipurpose halls or markets, to later compare the performance of the material in conjunction with concrete and steel.
