It always cracks me up when Brits talk about how cold it is there.

The temperature? No way! It’s not colder there than here! I think it’s more about lack of space.

You think GB is colder than most of the USA? I live in what is considered a Southern State but -15 is not rare here.

There are houses that size in the New England area and it’s really cold and snowy here in the winter! (-17 to -20ish C) the houses get heated. My house isn’t that big tho 🥲

My house is large, but old, so no open plan. My sister has a newer house with open plan. Hate it. Don't like seeing dishes and pots and pans. Too cold? Live in New England or Minnesota.

If the house is small, having an open plan helps it live larger.

I live on an acre with a creek running through my back yard in my city, four-bedroom home. I could never, ever afford that in the UK.

Not all, in glad you said in general, the average home size, from what I understand, is about 3x larger. Even tiny homes (the new type used to conserve space, and materials, and allow singles a very nice space that is a detached home but not as expensive. They can also be moved.) are built with open plans and lofts that are open to the central lower area. Tiny homes obviously easier to heat and cool. I loved my Aunt's and Uncle's home in Ireland, but it was certainly different from our home in CA!

It’s too cold to heat the whole space?? Huhhh I live in New Jersey 20mins outside of NYC and it’s pretty cold here all winter! Like 20 something degrees!!! Fahrenheit!!!! We have to heat the entire home also!!!

Not all US houses are that large. I live in a condo/townhouse development where homes range from 700ish sf for a 1br 1ba to 1900ish for a 3br 2 1/2 ba home. Most are about 960 sf to 1200 sf for a 2br 1.5vba to a 2br 2.5 ba. This is in NJ - suburban nyc. Most, however feature a moderately open floor plan on on the living and dining rooms.

In the UK, the houses are small for more space for new people and it warms us up since its always freezing here

the reason American houses are more likely to be "open plan" than UKian houses is that American houses get replaced on a much shorter cycle, so the replacement can be built to the latest fashion.

Not here in Spokane, WA. To me the houses are tiny. I’m originally from NJ and the houses have 5 bedrooms, a living room, family room, a powder room, 2 full bathrooms, plus a office and a finished basement and a Florida room and a wrap around deck, and the room are open to each other downstairs.

This makes sense if you don’t have central ac or heat, it is best not to have such open spaces.
But it is still very odd for me to turn on the tv and see someone talk about their “living room”, that basically is a bedroom with a sofa instead of a bed, completely enclosed with a door.

I love open plan too! I believe it's only been a 'thing' for the last 20 yrs or so. Our house was built 40 yrs ago and we'd love to convert it to an open plan, and knock down some walls. It's so dark inside otherwise!

Being American is nothing I would strive for. All these things are similar in Canada which is a commonwealth country, we share your culture, we share your passions, we respect each other more often and we respect democracy and the democratic process.
