A Quick Tour of Smederevo Fortress
Показать описание
The Smederevo Fortress is a medieval fortified city located on the right bank of the Danube River in Smederevo, Serbia. It was built between 1427 and 1430 by Despot Đurađ Branković, the ruler of the Serbian Despotate. The fortress was constructed as the new capital and defensive stronghold for Serbia, following the fall of Belgrade to the Ottoman Empire.Designed in a triangular shape, it features 25 massive towers and is divided into the Small Town (for the despot and his court) and the Large Town (for the city's residents). Smederevo Fortress played a vital role in resisting the Ottoman advance, though it fell to the Ottomans in 1459, marking the end of the Serbian Despotate. Despite being heavily damaged during WWII, the fortress remains an important historical and cultural landmark today.
