How Can Photons Be Massless? #Shorts

Why are "photons", tiny particles of light, said to be "massless"? How can something weigh nothing yet carry energy like heat. The answer has to do with the way light travels in space. In this Short, that is what we will aim to answer.

This really highlights the fact that gravity can be described as space-time curvature rather than a force. For how else could it have an effect on a massless "object" :)

A photon walks into a hotel.
The staff asked if he has any luggage. The photon says
"Nope. I'm traveling light."

Make a longer video on this topic please, it’s always been something I’m curious about 🙌🙌🙌🥰🥰🥰

One of the shortest videos on this subject, but with a wealth of information, answering so many of my questions about photons.

I can never get my head around the idea of something being massless or particles being point-like
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like if something is a quantifiable "thing" it should exist within space and be tangible? Elementary particles are weird

I feel like you were about to finish explaining and then the video suddenly ended

Interaction with higgs field gives particles mass; without it, they'd massless.

Photons don't interact with that field so they 'jump around'

this is one of those most fascinating thing...I struggle with the concept of particles travelling in a wave (frequency), transmission of energy from the sun, I think there is much more to be discovered about this area of physics...

Seriously, your voice is so calming and beautiful. Where is the long version of this video? I want to learn from the whole of it, not just from the shorts.

Your voice is magic. I've followed this channel since the start and its been wonderful to sea your development :)

Love the shorts man but drop a video I keep rewatching ur old stuff

One of the best explanations I've seen on this. The last time I saw a person I knew explaining how photons did not have mass, it took well over 5 minutes...

In less than a minute I'm a smarter individual. Thank you sir!

I'm guessing there's another equivalent way of describing momentum other than it being the product of mass and velocity?

If a photon is a particle, then is an antiparticle a photoff?

What is often said is that photons have EQUIVALENT MASS, (and yes, that creates the momentum)

I understand this as the energy mass equivalence, E=mc^2. Energy and mass are the same physical constants

Wave in the second dimension, particle in the third.

As a third year undergrad in physics, i don’t yet understand how something can have momentum with zero mass. That may sound very beginner to some but every momentum problem I have encountered mass was never zero

josephmahoney

That's contradict that the more momentum a particle has the more mass it'll have
So how is mass a particle at rest
Something doesn't add up
