Bill C-11, or the Online Streaming Act, stands to update Canada’s broadcasting laws for the first time in the internet age. It would mean more regulation for streaming services like Netflix and YouTube. Globe and Mail reporter Josh O'Kane sits down with Kieran Oudshoorn to discuss the potential changes and why some Canadian content creators are upset.

Once you have a gov oversee and judge content to manipulate the search algorithm and even sensor the content, then it falls into a a dictatorship process where the gov can manipulate and favor content that meets their agenda, while punishing content that does not agree with gov agenda or political beliefs.

The way I see it, C11 came about after the freedom convoy when everyone got to see all the live feed footage of what actually on, not what mainstream chose to show. I never paid much attention before that but was and still am disgusted at the manipulation of the truth.

You can always use VPN.

I hate having the government tell me what I can or cannot see and what kind of shows and content I can watch

As Canadian content creators who's livelihood is solely based on content we create, we really hope that this doesn't effect how we are seen around the world as Canadian viewership is under 10% on our channel and we are as Canadian as you could get! We build cabins, make maple syrup, etc. We are really hoping the government doesn't mess up the algorithm for us Canadian creators who make a living off of our content and cause us not to be pushed around the world as we currently are.

Canadian content creators aren't merely concerned about Americans; there are loads of Canadian YouTubers who are leaders in their space.

The number of Canadians you run into in the tech sphere, or the photography/cinematography spheres on YouTube, is impressive.

Why, then, are we looking to force them to compete with Bell and Rogers? Why are they going to have to apply for Canadianness of content? And if they are Canadian, write and film in Canada, are their own host, and yet, their video editor is Australian, why might they not qualify as being Canadian? Additionally, if they film a spot, on location at Consumer Electronics Show, or Game Developer Conference, etc, they might not be Canadian enough, while clearly, the legal team at, say, Global or CTV would have the might to ensure that their broadcast is, indeed, Canadian. How much will the indie content creator need to spend on proof of Canadianness?

Funny how these politicians never asked online content creators their opinion on something that determines their livelihood.

Even Canadians don't watch Canadian content. And when I do want to watch something Canadian related on YouTube, I write "<topic I'm interested> in Canada"
This Bill makes no sense.

Dude I was born in Canada and things like this among other things are just piling up. My frustration is gonna overtake me wanting to live here.

I'm 63 and have lived in Canada my whole life, most in Vancouver, 3 in Yukon and 7 in Saskatchewan. Canadian television would often present me with an 'aboot' for about, something I've never actually today from JJ at 4:15! WHAT a great country!!!!

I hate that this is a professionally made and they decided to only play through one speaker.
I work in this industry here in Canada and I know instantly that this bill will basically put me out of the job.

Unless Canada wants to bolster their film/animation/media industry without depending on being a cheap outsource option for america due to our low dollar and tax breaks, we would need to seriously invest in producing our own content. Not a little, a lot.

and I know our government- Conservative, liberal, or any others- would never do that. This bill would be horrible for everyone.

but. We should have a conversation what it means to be a 'broadcasting' service since regional locks are extremely out dated compared to how fast the internet has made accessibility for media being disturbed across the world.

This video is a great example why the CBC needs C-11 to silence online competition. It's taxpayer funded and have high end equipment, staff, and cost a bit to produce this video and yet look at the views and likes. You get more views and likes from an average Canadian content creator with a cell phone in their basement speaking on the same subject .What's worse is even with the CBC resources, this video is subpar. It's audio is off, and I guess no one did any quality check after uploading this video. An independent content creator would catch this error or reupload fixed content just out of respect for their fanbase expecting a certain level of quality standards.

It will probably hurt the content that is looking to be promoted in the long term and add an unnecessary layer of complexity. How about a curated feed of upcoming Canadian creatives instead rather than changing the algorithms

I am a YouTube creator. This has impacted me greatly!
In the last 7 days, I only have Canadian views on my channel. My largest audience is in order: USA, India, and Canada.
So, my content is not being pushed to those other countries anymore.
This is very very hurtful to my channel. I am beyond p!ssed.

There is nothing worse than someone pretending to be unbiased and then using passive aggressive underhanded language to be biased.

For “Canadian content” read content that Bell and Rodgers want you to see.

CRTC already uses and abuses rural internet rules, the that last thing we need is them in control of streaming too
