Yes, they can. Happens occasionally, especially with troops doing exercises in the woods. They typically inhale a seed or spore on accident and it embeds itself in the wall lining of the lung; a moist, warm, nutrient rich environment to thrive. They keep growing until the person feels pain or is coughing up blood and they end up having small saplings being surgically removed from their lungs.

I once had a dream that there was grass growing out of my legs, like somehow seeds got embedded in my skin and sprouted. I tried to pull them out, and it hurt and ended up leaving these bleeding spots where I pulled the grass out.
