With the closing of "Phantom of the Opera," and his latest musical, "Bad Cinderella," there is no Andrew Lloyd Webber production on Broadway for the first time in 43 years. The composer who helped define musical theater over the past half-century talks with correspondent Seth Doane about theater's future; the problem with the Tony Awards; writing music for Britain's new king; and the death of his son, Grammy-nominated composer Nicholas Lloyd Webber.

This made me teary-eyed, partly for the loss of his son, and partly because his music is so beautiful.

"Melody is everything to me, melody and story". Andrew Lloyd Webber has touched me with so many of his melodies and stories. His music carries my broken soul to the heavens.

Broadway needs to do something to make the brand more attainable. I went to NYC in April to immerse myself in the Broadway experience...something I hadn't done in a decade. 3 shows in 2 days. I saw "Some Like It Hot" (GO SEE THIS SHOW!!!), the revival of "Parade" (HEARTBREAKINGLY WONDERFUL) and ended with "Phantom" (my 4th time) one more time. Those 3 shows cost around $550.00 and with the exception of "Hot", my seats at the other 2 were well up into the mezzanine. Discounts are few and far between now. I used to be able to see 3 shows for around $350 and I ALWAYS sat in the front of the orchestra. Those days are unfortunately long gone. As a music teacher in an inner city where most of the families are considered low-income, I know that most, if not all of my students will never be able to know the thrill of attending a Broadway show. It's just too expensive for the masses. That is both a shame and a travesty.

I sympathize with Andrew for the loss of his son and for the bleak economic situations on Broadway.

Lord Webber has made a huge impact on Broadway (Cats, Evita, Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, and School of Rock) have entertained generations of fans. It is so uncanny not to have one of his shows in NYC.

I'm a New York native and I had parents that wanted me to be exposed to the arts. Since I was a child in the early 1970s, I have seen almost every major production on Broadway and off-Broadway, and it has been a wonderful privilege!

Cats the best musical, such tear-jerking, heartbreaking songs. Saw it maybe twenty times on Broadway. Hail Webber the genius!

Andrew Lloyd Webber is the only composer / producer to have top hits on both Broadway and West End London Theater at the same time. He is legendary and for good reason. He has composed 21 Musicals, many of them huge hits.

He is amazing! I wish I could go see Broadway shows, but where I live I can't even afford them. Plus it is rare to find any that are Autism friendly, which makes it harder to go enjoy them.

I sympathize with him because he's such a real person with a wonderful brain. I grew up loving his music and I don't think we can go much longer in the US without a show of Lloyd Webber on tour or on broadway. I desperately hope Phantom comes back and that we have such rapturous music here again.
