One of the most despicable chapters in history. Gruesome human experiments, war crimes, and the unimaginable suffering inflicted on thousands of innocent victims.

the fact that they tried to destroy so much of their own "work" say is all to me. All of the people involved in this knew how abominable it was and it's truly unfortunate that most of them never saw justice.

A lot of people always talk about the terror and cruelty Nazi Germany inflicted on their victims but not enough people talk about the equal terror and cruelty Japan inflicted on their victims.

The fact that the high-up Japanese scientists were able to continue their successful careers without a guilty conscience just shows how psychopathic they all were, and adds even more to theory that the majority of those experiments were conducted purely out of enjoyment and morbid curiosity rather than to gain any new scientific knowledge. Their primary goal was enjoyment, if they learned something useful along the way then that was secondary.

One of the worst things about Unit 731 to me is that after America successfully "won" the information that the Japanese gathered, they realised it wouldn't have mattered if the Soviets got it, or if the Doctors involved were executed for their warcrimes because in the end, almost all of the information was completely useless. A lot of it was already well researched, meaning the Japanese research was entirely pointless, but even if it was exploring something new, the tests were all done in ways that had no scientific value. Tests that had dosens of uncontrolled variables, literal war crimes that couldn't be repeated or reproduced, results that when repeated by the Japanese had conflicting information, and of course, the loss of who knows how much other information that was destroyed before anyone could see it. In hindisght a lot of American officials regretted that they essentially played into their enemies hands by pardoning war criminals in exchange for information they already had or couldn't use.

They built MASSIVE buildings that were never even used. The complex was gargantuan but all the "testing" was done in tunnels underground. There wasn't one survivor of 731.

Man the saddest thing about the war is, the civilians who had nothing to do with anything suffered the most, for no reason. The victims of this unit, the victims of the bombs, the victims of all kinds of war crimes that took place didn't start the war but paid for it in the worst ways possible. It's so heartbreaking to think all of these people were just normal people who were living normal lives until they were forced to be involved in the war. They all had loved ones and hobbies and dreams and everything was crushed because the people ruling their country decided to start a war. War is a nightmare

If hell exists, there's a special unit just for these people.

My grandmother told me how she once looked after a man who was a soldier and became POW in Japan. She told me how that when she asked why he can’t have dentures he had told her that he was caught by Japan and they had pulled out his teeth and cut his gums so he can never have dentures. That was just to a P.O.W. I can’t even imagine how much worse this was. This whole project was disgusting

As much of an actual real life nightmare as this was, Im not at all surprised. A bear, a tiger, a shark, a colossal squid, none of mother nature's best killers could ever hope to compete with the distilled, purified, and prolonged agony that a human can inflict unto another human.

That 68 year old must have kept living through such torturous execution methods out of sheer spite. I'd make a joke but for the context...instead all I can say is he's genuinely incredible, and the 731 staff were very lucky this guy didn't have a gun or a weapon.

As a Japanese American with many Japanese friends who outright were never taught of this history, thank you. It’s fucked up, but we gotta teach it. Never again.

I did a presentation partially on unit 731 recently for my milestones in biology class. The presentation as a whole was over ethics in biology, and I covered this, as well as Nuremberg trials, Hisashi Ouchi, Andrew Wakefield, and Lulu and Nana (twins modified by CRISPR). Crazy how America pretty much overlooked these atrocities in exchange for the data gained. Fun fact, Russia did actually intercept some 731 scientists, and they also partially pardoned the scientists in exchange of data

I’m Chinese. Thank you so much for making this video. This part of history should never be forgotten. I am from the northeast of China, we have relics and museums in memory of those lives that tragically passed away. The war ended but the pain and scar will never go away.

The fact that Unit731 was around less than 100 years ago, I refuse to think we have become better humans since that time.

I remember i was talking about unit 731 and the "rape of Nanjing" on reddit and some guy just completely unprovoked went "yeah but what about Hiroshima?" like that some how justifies unit 731. He obviously never read my comments he just saw "Japan = bad" and came to its defence. I'm sure Japan thanks you random guy on reddit.

Ok, as a nurse, that "injected air in his veins " - twice and definitely with purpose - just hit hard. That makes my skin crawl as does the rest of said atrocities

The head researcher for the hypothermia tests went on to win a nobel peace prize for his research... into hypothermia. It's a damn atrocity to the victims of Unit 731 that there wasn't an Nuremberg-tier case against all the researchers and soldiers who participated in that place.

Glad you mentioned the lack of prosecution of these war crimes. For some reason, the Eastern version of Operation Paperclip has flown under the radar.

you didn't mention that the director of unit 731 was not only not punished but went on to be the Japan minster of health for 30 years, having never admitted any wrongdoing, and having never faced any justice.
