Fanny Mendelssohn (14 November 1805 – 14 May 1847), later Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy and, after her marriage, Fanny Hensel, was a German pianist and composer. She composed over 460 pieces of music. Her compositions include a piano trio and several books of solo piano pieces and songs. A number of her songs were originally published under Felix's name in his opus 8 and 9 collections. Her piano works are often in the manner of songs, and many carry the name Lied ohne Worte (Song without Words).

This style (and title) of piano music was most successfully developed by Felix Mendelssohn, though some modern scholars assert that Fanny may have preceded him in the genre.

Once Felix Mendelssohn visited the British queen Victoria and asked her to interpret a song of his. She just picked out a song from Fanny, which Felix has published under his name and Felix had to admit, that his sister wrote this song.

I can see Fanny too was an admirer of Beethoven.

What a masterpiece! It is incredible to consider, after decades of listening to music that amongst the great teen-age natural musical geniuses, i.e. Mozart, Schubert and Mendelsohn, it is perhaps the latter one's sister that may have had the most outrageous early natural talent.

PASSION AND SKILL ..This Piano Music is outstanding...an art that seems to be lost in modern times. Mother played like this...have so missed this ! She went to Julliard School of Music, in New York.

The shade of Felix can be seen here as well as Fanny gave her own special features as a talented female composer.

Ich habe mehrmals gelesen, Fanny hatte besonders schöne, seelenvolle Augen. Und ich finde, auch in diesem Stück zeigt sie sich als ein seelenvoller Mensch - es klingt so berührend.

This music had been used as example in the italian youtube cultural video "Lezioni di Musica - Le Donne nella Musica" of the channel "musicamonteverde". Is a really very very interesting video.

Wow! Finale very Beethoven-ish. Full of fire, lots of heavy left-hand base, and motion shifting back and forth between the hands.

Beautiful and so easy to listen to. Thank you. That little Rondo in the first movement was delightful. What a wonderful musician. Was Felix protecting her from publicity back in the day? Cathy

There’s quite a lot in this little Sonata and there are a couple of other good recordings that bring out the qualities in it.

Like so many other female artists of music, writers, painters, etc. in the past, it’s such a shame she couldn’t take credit where credit was due in her own time. So much talent not celebrated or encouraged due to her sex.
