Presonus Studio One 6 : The Good / The Bad / The Ugly

In todays video I'm talking about Presonus Studio One 6.
This one feels a bit strange and even if we got a couple of great new features it doesn't live up to the "6" name.

Finally!!! A honest review. I spoke to someone who had an advance copy an knew what to expect. This was more a release for the shareholders not the user base. A release simply because they had to put something out. The video editor is a very welcomed edition and is the only reason I may upgrade.

You do it the wrong way ! Once you've set up your track in the arranger view with your own preferences, simply drag it with the mouse to the folder named 'Track Presets' in the open Studio One browser. From there, you can drag it back into any song with all the settings you previously configured.

This update is more like a 5.5 -> 5.7 or something like that. I don't know if Presonus is having a financial problem, but this update is not worth it (why do they want to sell such a small update as a big update?

Completely agree with all you said. I was hoping the Fender purchase wouldn’t affect the quality of this awesome DAW, but this is definitely not a good indicator of things to come. So sad 😭

You haven't understood the Track Presets feature. You need to "Load Track Preset" instead of "Apply Track Preset". It recalls everything, colors, all effects including the entire routing. "Apply..." just applies channelstrip settings. Also, saving and loading via drag'n'drop is way faster than with the dialog windows you use in your video.

I agree with you pro. It's a shame S1 is not showcased more by content creators on YT. It's super powerful. I've used S1 for 6 years and I love it. I'm using S1-5 professional and I don't think I'll be upgrading S1-6. Good vid man.

You are absolutely correct my friend. This happens, when a company is a hardware manufacturer with a small DAW department in a foreign country

Bruh... you've hit the nail on the head!!! Agree with everything you said... AND.. your last point about content creators doing something dope with S1 is bang on the money... WHY would Presonus show off their new Vocoder on drums???? It's a Vocoder. Show it on Show us the new features with someone current and in the industry making stuff that its users can relate to.
I understand Gregor and Joe are employees, but having current working producers, composers, mixers etc... navigate through the new features would make it feel like way less outdated.

FIRST. I love Studio One but this update has me hesitant for the first time. I want to love it but the only feature beneficial for me is the video player but i own NUENDO 12 so I'm good there.

I purchased the upgrade. S1 is my fav, despite some dalliance with Reaper. Which is great. The way I see it is I’m paying for all the upgrades they will make to s6 over the next 2 years. In that respect, it’s worth it to me.

I think what's great about SO6 is that it's already a great DAW. These seem to be small changes (on the surface) that probably took some time to implement. If you look at the main features this time, the Panning updates, Fader Flip, UI customization, and especially the video integration probably took some time to get right without bugs and are more foundational updates. I believe that those are now out of the way, we will get more plug in and content updates in the lifespan of SO6.

The good thing is, Studio One is already a fantastic DAW. Yes, everyone has wishes they want to see implemented, but I know that they are all "cherry on top" kind of things. "Oh I want this niche feature from Cubase/Logic/Reaper" or whatever. Other DAWs, like Pro Tools you could say things like "I want proper MIDI editing and workflow". Abelton and Reason you could say "I want better audio editing/recording" features. These are BIG blindspots, and those DAWs obviously have their niche markets. Studio One is in that Logic/Cubase world that does almost everything right. Live analog band recording? Check. Composing for a film? Check. Has good plug in selection? Check. Good at audio editing? Check. Good at MIDI? Check. Usable Mixer? Check. etc.

I'm hoping to always see more improvements, but the good thing is there's nothing "big" that's missing, and it has a lot of unique features that other DAWs don't have, while having almost everything else as well with a good interface and execution of those features.

My impression from Presonus description of new features mostly reflects your opinions. Ill stick with v5 and see if they give me a good reason to upgrade later, but with how I use the software it's not with upgrading at this point.

you are right ...i felt the same
the amount they are asking for upgrade is not justified.
earlier the upgrade amount was not 150usd its too much compared to the items i get
i am not going to upgrade now.

I am a 100% with you. Very underwhelming update from them. Nothing new. Some previous .5 versions brought more new features. A big let down.

Yeah, I’ll wait until studio one 6.5 and see what else they got. Logic pro is my main DAW right now, but I also use studio one.

Regarding the rant section, I see multiple reasons why it might have been released early. First, the merger with Fender; second before Black Friday, and third before Christmas in USA. It does seem like there are a lot of additions that are above and beyond an incremental version 5 update. As far as video stuff, I bought Magix Movie Studio software years ago that speacilizes in that purpose for like $69. It can do multi camera videos and so much more and syncing the music in SO to the video. It even comes with it's own free recording software, which is ironic. So that feature is not impressive to me.

Looks like we came to the same conclusion on this one! Love S1 also just hope things get better from here. 🙏

This update has some of the most requested features in Studio One. Stereo Pan integrated in the mixer (in the past it was frustrating to work with sends with the dual pan plugin). Now we have Follow Main Pan on sends. The fader flip is something that most pro tools users who now use Studio One wanted for years, it feels very diferent to automate sends with the fader. The way that eq3 works now is one of the most useful in any daw. The interface looks more polished, all this plus the good things you mentioned in the video, for me this update was very good and I’m pretty sure we’re going to get amazing things in the next Studio One 6 updates.

I must agree with you. This version made me feel a bit underwhelmed. This is more like a .1 or .5 upgrade, not a new version.

thanks a lot for the review. I agree about the Studio One content being not current - but their videos to get started are amazing
