Thank you Nad for this important discussion. I am an expat in Thailand, so I will speak exclusively about your country. First, western feminists don’t care about Thailand. It is not on their radar. Second, Thailand does not have the best reputation around the world. That is putting it mildly. The reason for that is obvious. Pattaya, Phuket, Nana Plaza, and Soi Cowboy attracts the lowest of the low from all over the globe. Hundreds of thousands of bar girls for millions of customers do not paint your country in the brightest of colours. It’s one thing to discuss this important topic. It’s quite another to keep these places open. Thailand cannot have it both ways. Either your government shuts the whole thing down so that Thai women can take their rightful place in their society, or you stop complaining about the low status of Thai women. There is good news in all this. Many more women in Thailand are now graduating from college than ever before. That is wonderful. I am a big fan of yours, Nad. You care deeply about this issue. That earns my deepest respect. I am on your team. If you want to empower Thai women, if you truly want to imbue them with self-respect, if you deign to significantly reduce sexual harassment, (all laudable goals), then shut the so called “entertainment zones” down.
