From someone who LOVED The Emperor's Soul: imo is a really good starting point—not least because it won a Hugo award—because it distills Sanderson's ability to write deep philosophical conversations down into a 30, 000 word piece. So much of his books, especially The Stormlight Archive, is deep philosophical conversation, and Emperor's Soul will tell you whether you connect with that. Plus, I honestly think the character work in The Emperor's Soul is really well done. The only issue you might have with this novella is that it basically has one of the thinnest plots I've ever seen. This doesn't bother me because I love a bite-sized story of character and philosophy, but a lot of people need plot in their stories, and if you are like that then it wouldn't be the best starting point for you because you wouldn't get to see the level of plot-work that Sanderson can do.

For the WoK cameos, those are confirmed on page but very subtlety through character descriptions but also doubly confirmed by Brandon.
There's also some easter eggs in WoR and OB too that are really really really subtle and and a couple of characters from other worlds are there (that aren't main characters)

The Elantris "sequels" are really still standalone books following characters from the first book. So it's a series of standalones.

When you see Warbreaker feels more vibrant and fun, do you perhaps mean it feels more………………colorful?
