I learned to chop when I worked on an orchard and we needed wood for the stove. Practice certainly helped! Nice work.

You did good making tangential splits is the go! you see so many "experts" hit straight in the middle might work in America with Ceder but won't work as well in Australia with our timbers

Axes can work if you work from the outside in . Buckin Billy Ray Smith shows some great techniques for this.

Mate, put an old tyre around the wood your chopping, this way it doesn't fly everywhere and it's easy to clean up once split

I like your attitude - practice makes better 🤜
Plus I learned that, having broken my axe today, I probably need to replace it with a splitter 🤣

The way you cut the wood is unorthodox but if it works then i have no problem i just slide my right hand down while holding the blocksplitter on the left hand so that whenever i split the wood all the momentum could cut the block cleanly through and vice-versa

Good tip about going with the grain. The block splitter is also not sharp - if it were it might get stuck in the wood.

When wood dries out it becomes harder to split. I understand that your Eucalyptus is very tough stuff and the cracks on the blocks that you are working on suggest that the wood was cut down some time ago and has lost most of its moisture content. Wood should be split when it is still 'wet'. One of the downsides with your method, is that sometimes when you make the split the axe/maul moves off suddenly to the side and for a fraction of a second you have no control of the implement. That is potentially dangerous. It will happen to you too, if it already has not. Having said that, it was a good video.

Use an old car tyre screwed to the bigger splitting log to stop the logs you are cutting flying off to the side. GAMECHANGER

put your legs apart and during chopping, move the lower hand towards the upper hand to increase speed! Also, use a bigger block, I see you are trying to brake the axe with your hands as it is splitting the wood. Keep practicing!

Does the block splitter go by another name? I can’t find it at Home Depot or Lowe’s
