My dad always called me dumb. I felt stupid my whole life. I was a huge Nirvana fan, in high school during the 90s. Now I don't talk to my dad and don't feel dumb anymore. I feel happy. To me this song means we can be happiest just living our life, even if other people are judging us. Ps my dad is an asshole.

I think it is an irony, I remember one interview when Kurt was a bit sarcastic about people who are not aware about anything in life and are not interested in anything, like when they have sh*** jobs, spend all day watching TV or doing nothing and they say they are happy. He said that calling that happiness was dump for him and he didn't understand them. I think his point was that people should more bother about different issues in life, instead of pretending they are always happy the way it is, be more realistic. In another interview he also said that people who mainly care about simple things in life are generally happier and it is probably a better way, but he just cannot be like that.
Kurt was very ambition artistically and very creative (writing, music, paintings), he was also very concerned about things like injustice in the world or making false stories about people, he said it was something that was making him angry. So comparing him to an average person, who cares only about his own business and simple solutions in life, you could describe him as somebody unhappy, complaining and depressed and this is how media often tried to show him, but I think, it was much exaggerated. He was just very aware and emphatic.
Taking drugs can be sometime a solution when you are too sensitive and empathic or you feel different to other people and want to be like everybode else, like them - "dump or just happy" (depends on perspective). But in this case it could be a warning that lack of acceptance is one of the main reason leading people towards drug abuse.
Anyway, only author knew what he meant, I based this on what I heard from his interviews, but everyone can have their own interpretations.
Paradox of his songs is that they often seem to be very simple and straight forward but if look a bit deeper, they show complexity of the person that he was and a different approach to life.
I think people should be more sensible when they write so judgemental comments about him. Love, peace, empathy and acceptance.

Frances Bean (who only referred to her father by his first name) did single out the song "Dumb" ... describing it as "a stripped-down version of Kurt's perception of himself -- of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation." She says she cries every time she hears it.

Every time I fuck up and disappoint my parents I always find myself listening to this song. Helps me cope with being the way I am. Glad I found out about Nirvana, their music is a life-saving thing.

Makes me cry to hear Kurt sing "I think I'm just happy"! Would have wished him happiness for decades!! 😭Nirvana's songs meant and mean everything to me. When I was younger I just loved the music - nowadays I am able to understand the lyrics as well and since then I feel like I feel.
